Orthodontist Emergency Care
At Musgrave Orthodontics, we know that sometimes life happens, and braces can bend, break, or poke when you least expect them. While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, knowing what to do can help you stay comfortable until our team can see you.
Below you’ll find quick tips for handling common orthodontic issues and what steps to take if you experience an injury to your mouth or teeth.
What are the Types of Orthodontic Emergencies?
Orthodontic emergencies generally fall into two main categories:
Emergencies related to braces or appliances (like loose brackets or poking wires)
Direct injuries to the mouth or teeth (such as a fall or sports injury)
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Sometimes, your braces or orthodontic appliances can become loose, bent, or uncomfortable. While these situations can be annoying, they usually aren’t serious. Here’s what to do until you can visit our office:
Loose Bracket or Band
Leave the bracket or band in place if it’s not causing discomfort.
If it moves, gently cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent irritation.
Call our practice during office hours so we can schedule a repair appointment.
Poking or Broken Wire
Try gently pushing the wire back into place using the eraser end of a pencil or a Q-tip.
If the wire still irritates your mouth, place wax or a small piece of wet cotton over the sharp end.
If needed, you can carefully trim the wire with clean nail clippers, but call us afterward to ensure proper repair.
Irritating Tie Wire
If a tie wire is poking your cheek or lips, gently tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser.
You can also cover it with wax to create a smooth surface.
Please call ahead before visiting.
To keep our schedule running smoothly for all patients, we can’t accommodate unscheduled walk-ins. We’ll fit you in promptly during our next available appointment slot.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth
If you’ve had a sports injury, fall, or accident that directly impacts your mouth, here’s what to do:
Apply ice immediately to reduce swelling.
Contact your general dentist first to check for tooth damage or fractures.
Your dentist may take X-rays to determine the extent of the injury.
If your braces or appliances were dislodged, call our office once you’ve been cleared by your dentist so we can adjust or repair your braces.
If a tooth has been knocked out or shifted, your general dentist will handle that first. After that, we’ll ensure your orthodontic appliances are secure and comfortable again.
After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies
If you experience an orthodontic emergency outside of regular office hours and are in pain or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Call our office and follow the voicemail instructions to reach our on-call team member. They’ll provide guidance on what to do next or arrange an urgent visit if necessary.
Tip: For most minor issues, orthodontic wax, warm saltwater rinses, and soft foods can help keep you comfortable until we see you.
